The BC tariff response has escalated in step with President Trump’s threats to Canada’s economy and sovereignty. The BC government has many countermeasures in effect and others will be introduced if Bill 7, “The Economic Stabilization (Tariff Response) Act” passes.
Countermeasures in Effect
- BC government, health authorities and Crown corporations will:
- Stop purchasing goods and services from U.S. suppliers and instead prioritize Canadian-made and goods and services, or goods and services from reliable trading partners
- Cancel existing U.S. contracts and non-essential subscriptions and software where possible
- Avoid non-essential U.S. travel
- Tesla electric vehicle chargers are no longer eligible for CleanBC and BC Hydro rebates
- Liquor stores have:
- Stopped importing U.S. liquor
- Pulled U.S. liquor from BC Liquor Stores shelves
- Added red maple leaf stickers to shelves so that consumers can more easily identify Canadian products
Proposed Legislation
The Economic Stabilization (Tariff Response) Act would provide the BC government the tools to fight back against Trump’s tariffs and counter their negative impact.
The bill would allow BC Cabinet to:
- Remove or amend interprovincial trade barriers
- Impose tolls on non-Canadian commercial vehicles using provincial public infrastructure such as highways
- Temporarily make changes that cut red tape and regulations so government can take swift actions to defend the B.C. economy
