TESA (Temporary Expanded Service Areas) have been extended from June 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023 when they’ll be replaced by permanent licensed areas. BC liquor licensees do not have to apply for a TESA extension and there is no additional cost. Local and Indigenous Nations can raise concerns about TESA authorizations for licensees in their jurisdiction before they are extended.
After March 31, BC liquor licensees who wish to continue operating outdoor or indoor patios created under TESA must apply for a permanent licensed area. The BC Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (BCLCRB) urges licensees to apply early because approval of an applicant’s proposed permanent structural changes can take up to 10 months.
Permanent Patio License Application Details
Since we published news about the first TESA extension in February, not only has the program been extended from June 1/2022 to March 31, 2023, there are now more details. Before making an application, review the patio requirements including occupant load, patio bounding, valid interest and seasonal patios.
How to Apply
Liquor Primary and Food Primary licensees:
- Log into the liquor and cannabis licensing portal
- Go to the “Licenses and Authorizations” dashboard and select the license you want to change.
- Select “New Outdoor Patio” for an outdoor TESA or “Structural Change Application” for an indoor TESA.
- Complete the permanent licensed area
The application fee for Liquor Primary and Food Primary at the time of this writing is $440.
