May 25, 2026Canada’s annual liquor excise tax increase officially took effect on April 1, 2026. This year, the Government of Canada extended the 2% cap it had enacted in 2024. At that time, the government had planned a 4.7% inflation-based increase before introducing the cap. Read the official Department of Finance news release “Extending alcohol excise duty relief to support Canadian businesses”.
The federal government has also extended the temporary 50% reduction in excise duty rates on the first 15,000 hectolitres of beer brewed in Canada, providing continued relief for smaller brewers.
According to reports from Capital Daily and Daily Hive, many craft brewers, wineries, and distilleries welcome the decision.
Consumers Will Still Pay More
Although the Canada alcohol excise tax was limited, consumers are still expected to see higher alcohol prices at retail stores, bars, and restaurants across Canada.
The reports note that the increase may continue affecting:
- Alcohol pricing for consumers
- Operating costs for restaurants and bars
- Costs throughout the beverage alcohol industry
